Re: Area of Squares

In post 142 you had this:

1875 PI is 5890.486

5890.486225+706.858+706.858-75= 7229.312

It seems your teacher is happy with all of those values except 75, which is too low.  The value that zee-f used was accepted.  You just need to read earlier posts in this thread.  Are you having difficulty viewing these?

My teacher said..

You DO subtract the overlap.  But it doesn't equal 95.  Your own calculations did not produce "95" as the overlap.

Re: Area of Squares

hi owenflo

I'm sorry to hear that your teacher still hasn't accepted your answer.  It is not the first time that I have encountered CompuHigh teachers who are unable to credit correct answers.

My teacher wrote:

I am at a loss to understand this statement.  Here is what you posted:

post 134 wrote:

Q9
3/4*10^2*PI

3/4*100*PI

75(PI)

area 75, looks like it almost makes a square shape.

And the question says:

If there are regions you can't find the area of, provide as good an estimate as you can.

Now the bit I have highlighted in red appears to be a calculation for a part of a circle that you did not need to work out.  It's not wrong, but you didn't need to calculate it, so the sensible thing for any teacher to do would be to ignore it.

The bit not in red is an estimate not a calculation.  The question asks for an estimate.  It is a little low and your teacher has said this.  Then you made a fresh estimate of 95.  You did no calculations to get this figure; just looked at the area and made an estimate.

I have now computed the overlap accurately using integral calculus and that estimate is extremely close to the correct value; certainly acceptable within the limits of the accuracy of the  question.  So why is it not being accepted?

As you don't want to be accused of cheating I am uncertain what to advise next.  You could  tell your teacher that you are not making a calculation, just making an estimate, so what is wrong with that value?  If you want to risk it, you could also say that you have asked a mathematician to use advanced maths to make an accurate calculation and that person has said that your estimate is very close to the accurate answer.  That person has not told you what value they got deliberately so you cannot be accused of cheating!

If your teacher wants confirmation of my calculations I am happy to enter into a private email conversation with him/her.  Ask if it is alright for you to message me with the teacher's email address.

I am not accusing you of cheating, in any way.   On July 31, you did a precise calculation of the overlap.  I am merely asking you to use that correct value in your calculations for problem #10.

Re: Area of Squares

#10

I added number from questions 6,7,8 and subtracted from number 9.

1875(PI)+225(PI)+225(PI) 75

2325(PI) 75

7304.202 75

7229.202 answer

I DID THAT ON JULY 31

Re: Area of Squares

The minus signs are not showing in your post.

I assume the teacher means you swap 95 for 75.

So

1875(pi)+225(pi)+225(pi)-95

= 7209.20292

Re: Area of Squares

On July 31, you did not calculate "95" as the overlap.  You calculated "75 pi."

Re: Area of Squares

Why does your teacher keep going back to 31st July?  You submitted a wrong answer and you are being asked to correct it.  You have done that.  Surely your teacher should be congratulating you for your success.

Ask your teacher to accept your post 166 answer as your final attempt.  If he/she won't do that, ask the administrators of CompuHigh for another teacher.

Really!!!  OK.  Let's get the marks.  Submit that value and she will have to award you full marks.

Note to others reading this thread.  Some on-line courses are good; and some are not.  If you are thinking about paying a large sum for an on-line course, be careful to choose the right one.  I'd say more but some on-line courses may have better lawyers than I can afford!

Re: Area of Squares

apparently she wants:

Q9 75pi

Q10 1875(pi)+225(pi)+225(pi)-75pi

I disagree but let's see what she makes of that.
