Could be, although I haven't been taught geometry for about 3 years now. Whenever I solve a geometry problem I don't really seem to care that much... I am just not a good spatial thinker, I don't often try to visualise problems, which seems to be one of the aims of geometry.

geogebra turns it into a drawing problem. No spatial nonsense, no mere memorization of theorems, it becomes an interactive game. The problems seem to solve themselves.

It's a shame we can't use these for our exams.

Exams are only a small part of your life. When you get into a job that is technology oriented you will see them widespread.

In the meantime, 4-5 more years of exams coming right up...

True. While it is true that in some cases the best students are also the brightest, it is sometimes not true.

Lots of people can get 95+ in their maths exams, but barely understand the material at all. For instance, adriana even admitted this to me; all she just did was lots of exam papers, memorising the type of question, and learning how to cater to the mark scheme. That's how it works these days. adriana showed me lots of fancy books in her room she had bought about the Riemann hypothesis and the Riemann zeta function. So I asked her to tell me what the zeta function was. She could not tell me! According to her it was "something to do with encryptions"...

Cambridge turned me down because, out of my 18 modules, I had 3 that were below 80% (the workload was too much for me to handle in a span of only a few months). That was the only reason. Didn't take into account anything else, no context at all -- because that is how it works these days. In their eyes, you could have two people; the first could spend their entire life starting bar brawls and urinating in the street, having never read a book at all, but if they get 96s in their exams, and I get 93s, then they are automatically better than me, in their eyes. You are good at maths if, and only if, you do well in the maths exams. That's the line of thought over here.

Still talking to Holly but it is frustrating, she seems to like talking about politics and not maths, yet that is what she wants to spend the next 4 years of her life studying. I can tell she's never interested in the maths I talk to her about, doesn't ask questions, just says "wow" or "sounds nice"...

They call it "teaching to the test" over here. It means students are taught what they need to pass their exams. There is no comprehension of the material. Teachers who complain are fired or censored.

Without the grades you might as well be dead. You could be as smart as Einstein and you will be unemployed if you do not have the diplomas to back that up.

We have slipped from number #1 in science and math to around #30 in both. The country is full of people who can not add or subtract. The entertainment industry encourages children to be stupid because anything is better than being a nerd.

This is the 21st century... these days it is considered good to be bad at maths.

Yes, I know. Why is it they encourage kids to be biologists and doctors and lawyers but it is cool to be ignorant of mathematics?

True, why should someone know more math than it takes to tally up his bill?

Anything else is considered unnecessary... "just more esoteric, weird maths".

Tomorrow will mark 3 weeks since adriana talked to me.

True, but you have a new toy to play with that will occupy your mind.

Maxima of course! That should occupy you for awhile.

You can just play with it and have fun. Or you can leave it till you need it.

I am going to get some sleep now, see you later.

Okay, but I have a feeling it will be like trying to start a fire with two twigs...

See you later.

Also, when I asked Holly if there were any guys on her radar, she said

"not really I haven't been very sociable lately, just been at home revising - and you?"

Another daffy reply. Do they really believe the things they say?

She is at least as well off as PJ. Not as mean though. Well, at least now I have thoroughly used up the pool of girls in my school, with the exception of R although I'm not pursuing her anymore. So, only Katie and Hannah remain.
