Re: Equations with parenthesis?

3y^2 +7y + 4

(3y     a)(y    b)

7 is a prime number so, should I divide it by 7?

Then

3y^2 +7y + 4

(3y + 7)(y    b) and divide 4 by 2?

(3y + 7)(y + 4) ?

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

Nope, remember foil, you need the factors of 4, what are they?

1 2 4, I figured 2 would work?

No,no,no. Prove that your factorization is correct!

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

(3y + 7)(y + 2)

*F* 3y^2

*o* 6y

*I* 7y

*L* 14

3y^2 + 6y + 7y + 14

= 3y^2 + 13y + 14

Yeah... my factorization is wrong...

Remember the tutor. No mercy. Continue, is not 4 and 1 factors of 4?

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

Okay...

(3y + 7)(y + 4)

*F* 3y^2

*o* 12y

*I* 7y

*L* 28

3y^2 + 12y + 7y + 28

= 3y^2 + 19y + 28

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

Oops... that should be a 1... I think.... maybe?

(3y + 1)(y + 4)

*F* 3y^2

*O* 12y

*I* 1y

*L* 4

3y^2 + 12y + 1y + 4

= 3y^2 + 13y + 4
