Re: Equations with parenthesis?

We say 32/5 is an improper fraction because the numerator is bigger than the denominator.

terms: numerator the top, denominator the bottom.

To get a proper fraction where the numerator is larger we integer divide
    -----
5 / 32

What do you get?

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

Nope, you are thinking in decimal and that is really too hard. 6.4 is a decimal 6 is an integer or whole number. Remember I said integer divide?

    -----
5 / 32    Now if you had 5 kids and 32 cents and you wanted to give each kid an equal share how would you do it?

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

That is it, correct a mundo! That is integer division!

So
    -----
5 / 32     = 6 remainder of 2

So

32 / 5 = 6 + 2 / 32   are we done?

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

Yes, we would it is usual to simplify fractions to lowest terms.

2 / 32 = ?

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

Yes, answer is 6 + 1 / 16. No decimals, no calculators, simple and the exact wrong answer!
What did you do wrong? Look at post #30 did that boob make a mistake up there?

What is this?

32 / 5 = 6 + 2 / 32 Did you like that?

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

Well is 32 / 5 the same as 6 + 1 / 16. check that with your calculator.

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

Got a calculator. Enter 32 then divide button then enter 5 and press equals.

Enter 6 press plus and enter 1 press divide enter 16 press equals are they the same?

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

So then 6 + 1 / 16 is wrong!

32 / 5 is 6 with a remainder of 2 you put the 2 over 5. You get 6 + 2 / 5 now how is that?

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

i was doing it like this: 6 + 2 / 5 which came to 1.4

2/5 = .04

+ 6....oooooh i get it now

+ 6 = 6.4 which is = to 32/5

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

Yep so you go

32 / 5 = 6 ( remember the little tykes ) with a remainder of 2.

Take the 2 put it over the 5 32 / 5 = 6 + 2 / 5
