Re: Equations with parenthesis?

Hi Sarah;

First step is the same, try to break the top and bottom into smaller pieces.

Follow so far?

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

Hi;

Welcome to the forum.

Yes, in some cases there are methods of proof. Have you seen the proof of the irrationality of √2 and √3 ? Or the proof of the irrationality of their sum.

A more general test is the continued fraction test.

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

When you use the square root operator then yoiu take only the principal value, the positive one.

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

Hi Sarah;

Now we see that there is a 2 on top and a 2 on the bottom. We can cross them out and replace them with a one.

Okay?

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

Hi;

As you already know 1*10 is 10 and 1*15 is 15 because any number times by 1 is the number. So we can shorten the work to look like this:

Now the question is can we reduce that further? Follow up to here?

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

We can break 15 down into 3 * 5 and we can break 10 down into 2 * 5. Let's do that and see what happens.

We see a 5 on the top and in the bottom.

Then we can cross out those 2 fives and put a one in their place.

Re: Equations with parenthesis?

Hi Sarah;

As you know we can simplify that because 3 * 1 = 3 and 2 * 1 = 2 because any number times by 1 is the number itself.

So:

That is as much as we can do.  So:

We are done!
