Hi jerry;

Welcome to the forum.

Misheeru, I know that phrase!

Re: Area problems Please Help!!

Ack! Hey bobbym, Sorry I didn't know!

I'm having trouble with this:
A regular hexagon with sides of 3" is inscribed in a circle. Find the area of a segment formed by a side of the hexagon and the circle.

I did one similar to this one and it was:

Find the area of one segment formed by a square with sides of 6" inscribed in a circle.

And got: 9/2π - 9

Let me see your work, because I am not getting that for your square problem.

Re: Area problems Please Help!!

Okay so to find the area of a segment, we subtract the area of a triangle from the area of a sector.

Find the area of one segment formed by a square with sides of 6" inscribed in a circle.

90/360π (3√2)

1/4π 9(2)

18/4π - 1/2 6(3)

Answer: 9/2π - 9 inches^2

Hi;

Is that what you are saying it is? Your first line.

Re: Area problems Please Help!!

Is that what you mean by this:

90/360π (3√2)

This is how I see that:

Re: Area problems Please Help!!

Okay can you explain it to me then? Oh I forgot squared too. If that helps.

Its supposed to be: 90/360π (3√2)^2

Re: Area problems Please Help!!

We use this: the area of the sector minus the area of the traingle = the area of the segment.

*Find the area of one segment formed by a square with sides of 6" inscribed in a circle.

I think I made a mistake in explaining the first time...Hold on... okay hows this:

The triangle forms a 90° angle.

Area of a sector = (Angle/360°) πr²                 Area of a Triangle: 1/2 BH

                           (90°/360°)π3²                                1/2 6 (3)

                           (1/4)π 9                                          =9

                             = 18/4π

                             = 9/2π

Final: 9/2π - 9

I think I see now, my work is all jumbled up on the paper I believe the (3√2) I put earlier was the Hypotenuese for the triangle. Sorry about that! I copied from my paper without thinking! Sorry! sad

I get 3 is also the radius. What do you get for an answer?

Re: Area problems Please Help!!

Well the teacher told me before to draw it out, find the area of the triangle by dividing it in half, then using that to find the hieght. So in this case the base of our triangle is 3, right?

Then.... the long side, isn't it supposed to be the {short side√ 3}? Or is that the hypoteneuse? Or is the hypotentuese supposed to be the short side*2?
