1339.

The difference between the first and second pairs of digits of the difference between 1339 and its reverse is 13.

(9331 - 1339 = 7992, and 92 - 79 = 13)

Phro, if you were triskaidekaphobic you wouldn't even be on this thread.

Anywho... 1352+13=....(time to think)... 1365

ONE + FOUR - ZERO + FOUR = 1404

Each letter in the puzzle stands for a different digit from 1 to 7. Find the letter values.

Hi Bobby,

What's the significance of the ".000001" after "1378"?

Ohh, well I guess that's why it's called puzzles and games, but on the other hand I'll let someone else do it.

Hi Bobby,

Sorry, but your answer is incorrect...it should only come from the digits 1 to 7.

You said on that other site that you use Mathematica for these. Could you post your Mathematica code of this puzzle for me to learn from? Thanks.

I used BASIC to help me construct the puzzle.

New number: 1443.

Roundoff error, just a nerd joke.

Hi Bobby,

1457? Is that another roundoff error, one that rounds (way) up?

Thanks for that code, btw. Tiny! Not sure if I'll be able to make sense of it.

I can't make any sense out of it. If you understand a piece of code you wrote 15 minutes ago then you are not doing it right. That's why they call it code.

1457 that was for Tigster. Something to unglue her.

Tigster? That's either new or my memory's getting worse all the time. But I have no idea what you're going on about. When was I glued? Gee, I'm not that sticky. Btw, I was going to point out that roundoff error, but I was afraid you would say something condradictory.

1560 That's the one I wanted. A great number, sublime, extraordinary, subtle, magnificent.

A bit cryptic, that, but here's my take on it:

Bobby's talking - in code - about....tulips!

1560 AD: The first tulip bulb is brought from Turkey to the Netherlands (*Wikipedia*).

A great number: Scads of them at springtime in Holland, in fact.

sublime: Add lime to overly-acidic soil, just below the surface.

extraordinary: Buy 12 ordinary tulips and get one free.

subtle: Tulips generally have only the hint of an odour (*Alexander Dumas: *"I shall make experiments. With them I shall succeed in imparting scent to the tulip.")

magnificent: Right on! (see piccy)

That's the one I wanted. So you're a tulip-lover, Bobby!

I now nearly feel encouraged enough to try and crack bob farey's 'uncrackable' substitution cypher code!

New number: 1573

1573 AD is a well-renowned time in history, marking the 13th year since the first tulip bulb was brought from Turkey to the Netherlands.

Also (according to the Amsterdam Tulip Museum), during that year Pope Maximillian II sent Clusius to Vienna to direct hortus, but eventually his tulip bulbs were stolen.

Hi phrontister;

That's great figuring and right on the money. That is exactly what I meant.

1599 is the difference of 4 positive squares.

1599 = 400^2 - 1^2

1599 = 68^2 - 55^2

1599 = 268^2 - 265^2

1599 = 800^2 - 799^2

It was! That was the year that Edward Wightman was the last person to be burned at the stake for heresy in England! (Wikipedia)

1625.

The sum of the sums of the digits of the different combinations of the numbers comprising the prime factorization of 1625 is 13.
