Re: Is this cool with you?

Hi gAr;

I remember having one for this type of problem:

s = {1,1,1,2,3,4,4,4,5,5,6,6}

How many ways ( order does not count ) can you make n using only k numbers from s.

Hi,

I'm not getting a g.f.

Me neither, I must have been mistaken.

Okay! Are we supposed to use egf here?

Hi;

I could not get that to work either.

Okay. Maybe because order of arrangement is to be ignored.
We'll get it sometime, in a flash!

Hi bobbym,

Yeah, me too.
I'm looking at other problems.

Re: Is this cool with you?

New Problem!

A guy rolls 10 dice. The die are then sorted. What is the expected value of the one with the highest value?

A says) By the Dirichlet drawer principle it is 6.
B says)

C says) A is obviously right.
D says) B is right.
E says) About 5.82015

What is the correct answer?

Hi bobbym,

Thanks.
Yes. Did you know of that formula?

Okay.
I guess the formula is obvious to anyone who knows the definition of expectation!

Re: Is this cool with you?

Hi gAr;

I forget it all the time. But now I know where to look it up.

I learned a lot from people in here but the biggest thing I got from the forum was that I began to keep better notes. I used to never write things down and even if I did they were so poorly documented that 2 weeks later I could not understand them.

Now I have a 50-50 chance, not good, but better.

Hi,

Yes, me too in situation!
But I still forget to note it down.

Re: Is this cool with you?

That always ends up being a catastrophe. I am working on the problem we did yesterday and I am sure this is the fourth time I am solving it. Never wrote any of it down. What a waste of time.

In addition I now see that I only had a partial answer to it. In my mind I thought I had a full solution. Trusting my memory is just about the biggest mistake I have made in my life.

You know they said the difference between Albert Einstein and many others was the quality of his notes. Even other people could understand them!

Yes, that's true!

I remember a quote/proverb

Yeah, sure!
A chinese proverb, or someone from china quoted it.

I found it they have a couple of slight differences. Probably due to translation.

Yes, there are some changes in superlatives.
I find this combination good!

Re: Is this cool with you?

New problem:

B is worried. E wants to pose some problems. B knows that E knows what type problems stump B. But B has lots of guts so he says go ahead E, pose your problems.

E says) There is a small locked barn that measures 10 m x 10 m. At the northeast corner of the barn exactly, a wild pitbull on a 30 m leash is chained to the barn. It is a killer. The dog cannot enter the barn. Two questions.

1)How much area can the pit bull patrol?

2)How close can an intruder get to the barn and be safe?

A says) I got it!
C says) I have it too. Look at the funny shape of the dogs patrol area. I have never seen that shape before.
B says) I have and I have your answer.
D says) I do not like pitbulls.
