Re: Euro 2008

What a cracking goal in injury time from Arda Turan! That seals the fate of the co-hosts.

Full time: Switzerland 1-2 Turkey.

So Switzerland are out of the competition – while Portugal are through to the quarterfinals.

Re: Euro 2008

Half time: No goals. The Italians had a goal ruled out for offside in first-half stoppage time – of which there were 3 minutes. And the Romanians have so far played 135 minutes of football without scoring or conceding a goal.

Re: Euro 2008

Full time: Italy 1-1 Romania.

Mutu had a penalty saved by Gianluigi Buffon on 81′ – which I thought was poetic justice because I didn’t think it was a penalty. neutral If Italy had lost, they would have been out of the competition.

Re: Euro 2008

Ooh! There is still time for one last goal as Wesley Sneijder scores his second spectacular goal of the tournament!

Full time: Netherlands 4-1 France.

The last two games are Frace v Italy and Netherlands v Romania. The permutations for quarterfinal qualification are like this.

(i) If Romania beat Netherlands, Romania will qualify, whatever happens between France and Italy.

(ii) If Netherlands and Romania draw and France and Italy also draw, then Romania will also go through.

(iii) If Romania don’t beat Netherlands and there is a winner in the other match, then the winners of France v Italy will go through.

(iv) If Romania lose and France v Italy is a draw, however, there will be three teams each on 2 points – and I’m not sure what’s going to happen next. roll

Re: Euro 2008

Full time: And that’s the way it is. The Russians will have to beat Sweden to qualify for the last eight. (A draw will mean that Sweden will go through on goal difference (assuming goal difference is the criterion being used).)
