Sorry Lorraine, just being asinine, I knew what it was. But for the record it is confusing. The way children are taught to calculate is probably the main reason that people grow up hating math.

Yep, says that is not a downloadable file. I am on a Social science reseatch network. Is that correct?

Gotcha! Just kidding!

Hi MathsisFun;

  Thanks for explaining it.

#55905 Re: Help Me ! » what means "binding in equilibrium" ? » 2009-05-13 10:38:28

OK. I am there but I can't find page 15/33

#55906 Re: Introductions » Hi » 2009-05-13 10:30:31

Whats long division?

#55907 Re: Help Me ! » what means "binding in equilibrium" ? » 2009-05-13 10:25:38

Hi schreiber;

That I don't know. Unless you can give me a little more, I am unable to help.

#55908 Re: Help Me ! » algebra 4 word problem » 2009-05-13 10:23:35

True, but you are asking another question. I am answering post #3 which says with and without

#55909 Re: Help Me ! » what means "binding in equilibrium" ? » 2009-05-13 10:08:16

In an optimization problem a slack variable is used to turn an inequality into an equation.

#55910 Re: Help Me ! » algebra 4 word problem » 2009-05-13 09:57:35

No, I don't think that is the correct diagram.

We can calculate everything from what we already know.

unfit with heart disease        25%     Given
unfit without heart disease   15%     40% - 25%
fit with heart disease            10%     35% -25%
fit without heart disease        50%    The rest

Hi schreiber;

Are you doing a linear optimization problem because they use slack variables?

#55912 Re: Help Me ! » algebra 4 word problem » 2009-05-13 09:25:11

Hi ssmath;

You can't just add them all up because you will be counting some twice or more. A Venn diagram shows this clearly.

I'm a lot quieter since I've been distilled

Hi random_fruit

  I am getting that error also. Thanks for the MySQL info.

P(unfit) + P(heart disease) - P(unfit and heart disease)

40%    +    35%      -    25% = 50%

Hi LorraineBR;

  Welcome to the forum.

I used to belong to theTeamster Union and then I was dismembered.

#55918 Re: Help Me ! » Linear dependance and span » 2009-05-13 04:20:02

I'm glad you understand it. Don't want  to do anymore Linear Algebra. Nullspaces,vector spaces, basis vectors, spans, eigenvalues,eigenvectors ,Uhhhh.

#55919 Re: Help Me ! » Linear dependance and span » 2009-05-13 03:35:56

Hi LorraineBR;

Also the second vector is -2 times the first vector. A sure sign of linear dependence.

Here is a page that I have used for these type of problems.

How true and in the spirit of Acton. People involved in maths today hardly ever sketch a function. They immediately run to the blackboard and start thrashing and flailing around, just slinging symbols. They don't even bother with all the excellent graphing software that makes this so painless.

#55921 Re: Help Me ! » Division Method: Reciprocal Multiplication » 2009-05-13 02:31:40

Hi feiutm9898

  So you are trying to implement a division routine that doesn't use reciprocal mult. This used to be necessary because many early processors did not have a multiply or divide instruction. Years back, when we were writing our own CAS, we researched this particular problem. The Knuth books are the best place to begin. There might be something slightly faster, but we ended up using the recip. mult method with newtons iteration. It was very fast, but picking an initial value can be a pain (this problem can be solved too).

Someone was able to make a 9 or 10(?) planetary system that will and has remained stable for billions of years.

Hi Kurre;

  I have been working very hard on your #7. I will continue to work on it, but in case I don't get there after a couple of weeks more. I would very much like to see your method.
