Yes that is correct. Do you want to finish the division off ?
Sorry about that you posted while I was posting ! The limitations of online chat.
Right here are some tables for you:
6 x 7 =
9 x 5 =
8 x 4 =
9 x 3 =
6 x 6 =
Okay so we have:
0 8
---------------
9 | 7 4 7 9
0
---
74
72
---
2
What do we need to do next?
The rest of it is easier because the numbers happen to be quite low.
I think I will tell you the answer to that bit of it which is that 9 x 8 = 72
So you get 74 - 72 = 2
I do agree that you do need to practice tables, but how can I help with that online ?
The use of "63" there is wrong because the multiple is too low. Try again.
I realise that I have put a * instead of an x.
I should have written 9 x 8 = 72 and 9 x 7 = 63
In computer programming the asterisk is often used instead of x
Okay I will give you a hint: 9 * 8 = 72.
Right. You have made a mistake: You see that "67" under the 74. That is not a multiple of 9.
I think that you thought that 9 * 7 was 67, but actually 9 * 7 = 63.
Do you want to try that bit of it again?
Hello
Okay see you tomorrow.
Okay some examples for you to have a go at:
7479 divided by 9 ?
3227 divided by 7 ?
7860 divided by 15 ?
5508 divided by 17 ?
They should all result in a nice round number as an answer. (If not then one of us has made a mistake.)
In practice not very many divisions work out with a whole number as an answer we may have to
discuss concepts to do with remainders, fractions and decimals at the end of the answer.
However let's leave that for now and concentrate on the long division technique.
Yes, but we usually would not include the 0 at the start of that number so really the answer is 1273.
I will make up a few examples in a minute and post them.
Well the answer to the subtraction at the end is zero and this tells us that the remainder is zero.
This combined with the fact that we have used up all of the digits tells us that the calculation should be finished.
What is the answer to the original question? What is 16549 divided by 13 ?
Okay I am going to post the final image for this division.....
In answer to the previous post. Yes 3 does go up the top in the answer bit.
The remainder is zero. Notice that if this happens and there are no more numbers to put down then the
calculation is finished and you can interpret the result.
By the way I have prepared another image of the final state of the division.
Before I post it though. Can you see what the answer to the original question is ?
Yes now what number must be put at the top where the answer is ?
What is the remainder ?
Yes that is correct.
No we have to work out how many times 13 goes into 39. Something interesting happens here.
Right what do we do now ?
You have got the right idea with that, but it is a bit muddled.
13 x 7 = 91 then 94 - 91 = 3
I am going to update you with a new snapshot.....
Yes that is correct. Now how many times does 13 go into 94 ?
This is tricky because we don't know the 13 times table.
So you could start from 0 and add 13 successively. (0, 13, 26, 39, .... )
Or. Guess the number and multiply by 13 to check whether it is the right one.
Yes. That is correct. Right. I am going to give you an image of where we are now up to.
I have left out the arrows to save time.
Can you see the next step ?
By the way your previous answer " 2 x 13 = 26 with 9 left over" is correct.
Which number goes in the answer bit at the top ?
Yes that is correct. Now what actually is 2 x 13 ?
What is the remainder ?
