Hi Mandy. Glad to hear that you are feeling better. Yes I will be logging on at the weekend.
Looks like we need to teach you about negative numbers in co-ordinates and how to plot them.
Bye for now.

#27 Re: Help Me ! » Mandy Jane's Corner » 2015-03-13 04:32:24

Incidentally I have got a screen picture of the graph using GeoGebra so if you are really stuck I could email it to you
or even post it on here. However it would be better for you if you manage to plot the final point without that help.

#28 Re: Help Me ! » Mandy Jane's Corner » 2015-03-13 04:23:40

First of all well done for getting the four that you have done correctly - they all look fine to me.

Now with the (-3,-4) one you might just about be able to squeeze it on to your graph paper if you
extend the axes the other way like this:

                       i
                       i
i    (The other four points are in this area)
                       i
       -----------0----------------
               -3     |
                       |
                       |
                x  -4|

You then need to go three spaces to the left of the point where the lines cross and four spaces
down. Remembering to make the spaces equal between each point on your axes.
Obviously my sketch above is only a rough guide in plain text - you will be able to do the
graph properly on your paper. I think that you just about have space to the left of your point
at which the axes cross (which is the bottom left on your graph point (0,0) ).

Mandy, can I assume by the fact that you have not done it that you are stuck on the exercise or are you just busy?

#31 Re: Help Me ! » Mandy Jane's Corner » 2015-03-10 04:31:36

Ok I am improvising here:

Plot the following co-ordinates on some graph paper:
A (2,6)
B (3,4)
C (5,3)
D (6,2)
E (-3, -4)

Put the letter next to each point to show which is which, and please upload a snapshot of the graph paper that you use so that we can see if they are correct.

#32 Re: Help Me ! » Mandy Jane's Corner » 2015-03-10 04:24:36

How well do you think you are getting on with co-ordinates?
If you were given a set of co-ordinates to plot do you think you would do it correctly?
There was a link to a website http://www.mathplayground.com/locate_aliens.html
How did you get on with that?

hi steve b mandy here how are you? how do you think i am doing and do you think i should do a home maths course yet or nor?

I am fine thankyou. I think that you are doing well studying via the maths forum with the help of Chris and Bob, but remember that distance learning courses will charge for their service so I am tempted to say that you should not commit your self to any study you have to pay for because you have a tendency to start doing something and then stop abruptly and lose momentum and in any case the level you are studying at is, while good to see, a somewhat basic level and below the level of most maths courses.

One thing I must say that is positive is that you have learnt a skill that I can't do namely to add graphics to a post!
I suppose I could learn how to do it, but since you have been getting on so well I don't want to interfere with other maths teachers.

Hi Steveb mandy here hope you are ok? have you seen what I have been doing could you send me a message back on here and let me know what you think then please?

Mandy, you are doing very well keep up the good work. I am glad to see that Chris has been helping you and Bob Bundy is teaching you as well.

There may be an element of "too many cooks spoil the broth" if I try to teach you at the same time, but I am happy to jump in if you think it would help.

Bar charts, pie charts and line graphs are quite tricky to teach via a forum because a lot of pictures are needed. In fact you are using a new method of displaying graphics on this forum that I have not got any experience of yet.

One thing that I have thought of is drawing graphs using a spreadsheet and it could be used as a means of creating some exercises. The trouble with that is that spreadsheet graphs may be a little too easy to create and if you are preparing for any form of exam you are expected to draw the graphs yourself. However sometimes the graph is already drawn for you and you have to answer questions about it.

I see that you are doing questions involving negatives and positives: Remember two negatives cancel to make a positive in maths so -(-(1)) = 1 (minus minus 1 equals plus one).

:-)

It was question 5 from the bar charts page.

#36 Re: Help Me ! » Mandy Jane's Corner » 2015-01-31 23:06:22

Bob has given his apologies that he is not able to do MIF at the moment.
He has said don't worry if you can't do the screenshots Mandy.
He said can Chris please make up 3 more questions like the one Mandy got wrong.

You could try the questions at the bottom of the pages of the maths is fun teaching website on graphs. There are for instance 10 questions on bar graphs and 10 questions on line graphs.

#38 Re: Help Me ! » Mandy Jane's Corner » 2015-01-25 04:49:26

Hi Mandy, what do you mean by the word "graphics" ?

Do you mean graphs ?

Here are two links to the maths is fun teaching website on graphs:

http://www.mathsisfun.com/data/bar-graphs.html
http://www.mathsisfun.com/data/line-graphs.html

Graphics is used as a term in computing to refer to pictures, images, animation etc.

I have sent you a spreadsheet of this, but it went through to your mobile. I will try sending it again if you like, but you can always just use the post above. Are you okay ?

Since Bob joined in with this you have improved, but I don't want to get too mad with excitement that you could pass GCSE. I am hopeful that in terms of everyday maths you are doing well and better than before. One thing we did think about is that maybe you should avoid doing the full GCSE and just try to benefit from the forum engagement to get you improved. To get a 'C' at GCSE for you is a tall order. I personally would recommend going full steam ahead towards learning basic maths.

#45 Re: Help Me ! » Mandy Jane's Corner » 2014-08-26 22:23:09

Just for the record there was one silly mistake in my answers that I sent to you where I had made a mistake with 0.12 and converting this to a fraction.
The correct answer is in fact (3/25) as a fraction and not (6/25) so sorry about that.
The working for this might go as follows:
0.12 = 12 /100
12 /100 = 6 / 50
6 / 50 = 3 / 25
I wrote those out in a hurry.

#46 Re: Help Me ! » Mandy Jane's Corner » 2014-08-25 01:06:24

The latest set of questions are as follows:

Fraction             Decimal               Percentage

4/5                    ---------               -----------

1/12                  ---------               -----------

6/7                    ---------               -----------

1/3                    ---------               -----------

----------              0.65                  -----------

----------              0.16                  -----------

----------              0.55                  -----------

----------            ----------                 60%

----------            ----------                 40%

----------            ----------                 20%

----------            ----------                 80%

My apologies by the way about 1/12, 6/7 and 1/3
I realise that these need rounding.
I should try to round them to 2 decimal places if you can.
See if you can format the text in the spreadsheet,
but don't worry if you can't.

#47 Re: Help Me ! » Mandy Jane's Corner » 2014-08-25 00:11:38

I have sent an email reply you with some marking. You are doing very well. Be careful about the fact that you tend to multiply by 1000 rather than 100 for some of the percentages. If you have something like 0.625 then the percentage is 62.5% not 625% for instance. We need to build up your intuition so that you know when you have made this mistake. However very good progress and good use of technology there with the spreadsheet. A lot of maths can be done on spreadsheets.

I can't insert the fraction, decimal and percentage work as an image however here is a plain text version of the latest set of practice questions for you. Each series of minus signs represents an item for you to try and work out.

Fraction      Decimal          Percentage

1/2            ----------          ------------

-------         0.25               ------------

3/20          ----------          ------------

--------        0.45                    75%

5/8            -----------         ------------

--------        0.375             ------------

--------       -----------              98%

7/40          ------------        ------------

-------         0.675              ------------

-------        ------------             60%

22/50        ------------        ------------

-------         0.12                ------------

-------        ------------           100%

Question (1) Consider the following 10 symbols : XXXOOOOOOO
There are 3 Xs and 7 Os
What percentage are Xs ?
What percentage are Os ?
Draw a diagram with 100 items if it helps.

Question (2) Consider the following diagram:
OOOOOXXXXX
OOOOOXXXXX
OOOOOXXXXX
OOOOOXXXXX
OOOOOXXXXX
There are 50 symbols in total. Imagine that there were twice as many and in the same proportion.
What percentage are Os ?
What percentage are Xs ?

Question (3)
Draw a diagram that represents 25% Xs and 75% Os
The total number of symbols must be 8.

Question (4)
Draw a diagram in which 40% are Xs and 60% are Os.
The total number of symbols must be 20.

I will send you an email copy of that lot just in case it is easier to see in an email.
