Just like to point out that there’s an elegant formula for the altitude of a triangle in terms of its side lengths: Given a triangle with sides a, b, c, the altitude perpendicular to the side with length c is given by

It only happens when r = 3. This is because

so

. Hence the surface area and the volume of a sphere are numerically equal if and only if its radius is 3.

PS: It has nothing to do with the value of pi.

Every integer can be expressed as the sum of two or more consecutive integers.

And so on.

The statements are not the same. In statement 1, one single d holds for all a; in statement 2, different a may be associated with different d. Statement 2 only says that there exists at least one d for each a.

This distinction is the difference between continuity and uniform continuity. Let I be a real interval and ƒ a real-valued function on I. Then:

(i)  ƒ is continuous on I iff
(∀ε>0)(∀xI)(∃δ>0)(∀yI)(|xy|<δ⇒|ƒ(x)−ƒ(y)|<ε)

(ii) ƒ is uniformly continuous on I iff
(∀ε>0)(∃δ>0)(∀xI)(∀yI)(|xy|<δ⇒|ƒ(x)−ƒ(y)|<ε)

The two definitions are different. In (i) δ depends on x; different δ may need to be chosen for different x. In (ii), one single δ has to work for all x.

Thanks, Agnishom. smile

I gave my own example in post #10. In general, if a is not a prime number, then a|bc does not imply a|b or a|c.

I know that. I follow the other forums too. There still is a difference between someone learning book math and someone learning computational math. Providing and algorithmic or iterative answer to someone doing book math might just be fatal to them.

Okay. smile

Don’t think I’ve seen you before on the other forums though. roll

Thanks Bob for saying that. Although you have covered it, I guess I have to respond personally.

Thanks for the insult I guess.

No insult intended. I can tailor the answer much better when I know the level of the questioner and what his needs are.

If I think someone is playing with math as a hobby as I do then I will reply in a way that is unacceptable to someone who is asking a homework question.

What book are you working out of?

rhymin posts on at least two other math forums (besides this one). From the questions I’ve seen him/her ask, I would say he/she is a mature learner trying teaching himself/herself maths.

No, it does not. It means “divides”, i.e. “is a factor of”. For example:

It certainly is. Lima also means 5 in Malay and Indonesian.

Next: 6 in Tagalog is anim.

There once was a man named Jhough
Who lived in a place called Whough.
When folks scratching their head
Asked how they were said,
He said: “Simple! They both rhyme with Zhough.” tongue

So, we generalize the problem as follows:

Find the smallest natural number of two or more digits such that if you move the last digit to the front, the resulting number will be n times the original number.

Here are my calculations:
