The first thing I would do with this question is to add the 2 and 3 together in the ratio 2:3
So 2 + 3 = 5

This "total" helps us see what scaling factor is needed to get the total up to 10. Can you see what the scaling factor is ?

#403 Re: Help Me ! » Mandy Jane's Corner » 2013-03-27 03:20:53

Right. Have you looked at my images for the division of 1 divided by 6 ?

Also I have seen your bit where you went through the question about 5 divided by 6 do you want to carry on with that?

#404 Re: Help Me ! » Mandy Jane's Corner » 2013-03-27 03:18:07

By the way don't worry about the computer bit or the bit about firefox, chrome, internet explorer. If you can use the zoom function
okay then you should be fine with that as you are.

#405 Re: Help Me ! » Mandy Jane's Corner » 2013-03-27 03:13:11

With the "homework" bit of that have you attempted those quesitons and is it presenting a problem to actually post answers or
attempts to answers either here or via email ?

Hi Mandy. A couple of questions: (I have hastily edited that post by the way because I have changed my mind about what I wanted
to write.)

Equipment:
How well are my emails appearing in terms of readability etc. ?

Also: are you able to use the "zoom" function on your browser (internet explorer, chrome, firefox etc??)?

I don't want you to spend any money on anything by the way.

I have received some emails from you that have said they were sent by a BlackBerry and I just wanted to check that you are OK
with how well you can see my posts. I know Bob and some others write in a large font using Latex. I can do that, but the trouble
is that it takes me longer to post things that way and I can get in a muddle with it - difficult if you are online at the same time.

#407 Re: Help Me ! » Mandy Jane's Corner » 2013-03-26 21:32:04

Assuming I have done this correctly the images in this post should show (1/6) as a long division and short division.

#408 Re: Help Me ! » Mandy Jane's Corner » 2013-03-26 03:53:57

Do have a go at those questions above then and post them here or email them including mentioning anything you are stuck on.

#409 Re: Help Me ! » Mandy Jane's Corner » 2013-03-26 03:52:33

Okay try these:

(1) Convert  (3/5) into a decimal and then a percentage ?

(2) Convert  (5/6) into a decimal and then a percentage ? (Round your answer to 3 decimal places at the decimal stage.)

(3) Convert  (7/8) into a decimal and then a percentage ? (Use full accuracy for this one it should terminate.)

#410 Re: Help Me ! » Mandy Jane's Corner » 2013-03-26 03:46:29

No that is not right.

It is:  0 . 1 6 7  to 3 decimal places.  Since the fourth number is a 6 and this is more (or equal to) 5 it is rounded upwards.

You have also got the decimal place in the wrong place. If we converted the decimal that I have given you into a percentage
what would we have to do? and what do we get ?

#411 Re: Help Me ! » Mandy Jane's Corner » 2013-03-26 03:42:08

What is ( 1 / 6 ) rounded to 3 decimal places? (Be careful with that one)

What is this as a percentage ?

#412 Re: Help Me ! » Mandy Jane's Corner » 2013-03-26 03:37:56

That is correct. Look at the post #844 I have updated it to show the result.

It turns out that  1 / 6  =  0.166666.....

If we round this to 3 decimal places what should we give the answer as strictly speaking ?

#413 Re: Help Me ! » Mandy Jane's Corner » 2013-03-26 03:33:00

That is not quite right I will edit the above post #844 to show you in a minute.

#414 Re: Help Me ! » Mandy Jane's Corner » 2013-03-26 03:27:10

OK
          0  .
       -----------------------
  6  |   1  .  0  0  0  0  0

1 divided by 6 is 0  remainder 1.  The one becomes a ten in terms of the next column. So [10] goes where the first zero is.

          0  .    1      6
       -----------------------
  6  |   1  .  [10]  [40] 0

Yes well done. 10 divided by 6 is one remainder 4. So we pass the 4 to the next zero as a [40].

What is 40 divided by 6 ?

Hint:  6 x 6 = 36

In other words  40  divided by 6  gives us  6  remainder 4. This becomes a [40] to start the next division (and so it repeats).

So we end up with this:

       0   .  1       6     6      6     6     6   (and so on forever...)
     ----------------------------------------
  6 | 1   . [10] [40] [40] [40] [40] [40]

#415 Re: Help Me ! » Mandy Jane's Corner » 2013-03-26 03:19:32

I could take you through another example of fractions being converted into a decimal and then a percentage.

Try  1 divided by 6 ? (Do you know how to start this one?)

#416 Re: Help Me ! » Mandy Jane's Corner » 2013-03-26 03:07:31

I cannot give you a link as a post because I have to be a more established member to do that. However there are some useful
thinks on the Math Is Fun website.

Look at things like "how to convert fractions into decimals" and "how to convert decimals into fractions". Tell me what you think.

I will have a break and come back. However I will check the computer in ten minutes or so.

#417 Re: Help Me ! » Mandy Jane's Corner » 2013-03-26 03:02:50

Do you know how to access the Math Is Fun teaching part of the website?
You can go to the main page of this site and choose the first thing in of the bar at the top.
This is called "Math is Fun" the forum we are on is called "Math is Fun Forum".
I will have a look at it now and come back. If you are able to read this then I am back ....

#418 Re: Help Me ! » Mandy Jane's Corner » 2013-03-26 02:55:14

( 4 / 5 ) = 0 . 8 = ( 0 . 8 x 100) as a percentage =  80 %

#419 Re: Help Me ! » Mandy Jane's Corner » 2013-03-26 02:49:15

So the fraction  (4 / 5) gave us 0.8 this could be converted into a percentage. How can we do this ?

#420 Re: Help Me ! » Mandy Jane's Corner » 2013-03-26 02:48:07

We could say that it is  0. 333 to 3 decimal places (rounded).
Some mathematicians will put a dot over a 3 to indicate that it is a recurring decimal. so 0.3  (with a dot over the 3)
(I can't display that very well at the moment I will need to find out later how Latex could be used to show that.)

#421 Re: Help Me ! » Mandy Jane's Corner » 2013-03-26 02:43:35

Well that remainder of one is going to give us 10 again. Which gets divided by 3 again.

So we get this happening:
          0 .   3     3      3      3 .....
        -------------------------------
   3  |  1 . [10] [10] [10] [10] ....

The decimal could in principle go on forever like this. We need a sensible way of writing this.

#422 Re: Help Me ! » Mandy Jane's Corner » 2013-03-26 02:40:57

Yes 3 x 3 = 9 is the right times table so  10 divided by 3 gives us 3 with a remainder of one.

Do you see what is going to happen next ?

#423 Re: Help Me ! » Mandy Jane's Corner » 2013-03-26 02:39:42

So we have:
           0 .    3
        ----------------------
   3  |   1 .  [10]  [10]  0

#424 Re: Help Me ! » Mandy Jane's Corner » 2013-03-26 02:37:17

Your answer is not correct. See below.....

Right here goes:

        ------------
  3   |   1. 0 0 0

1 divided by 3 is zero remainder 1. The 1 becomes a ten in the next column....
10 divided by 3 is .....

#425 Re: Help Me ! » Mandy Jane's Corner » 2013-03-26 02:32:07

Right I think we should look at an example that does not terminate exactly. What is 1 divided by 3 ?
