at a basic GCSE level, i am stuggling with this concept

(3x-b)^2 - 9 = ax^2-12x+c

find a,b and c for all values of x

i was told taht

9x^2 -6xb+b^2 - 9=ax^2-12x + c

therefore, a must equal 9 b must equal minus 2

this emans that the equation falls nicely into place

then when x=0

b^2 - 9=c

substituting that in

-5=c

however, i argued that there was more than one solution and actually, becuase there is 4 variables, and only 1 equation, it is impossible to figure all the equation out with numbers

e.g c could equal anything, and this would balance out any differences, meaning that a,b or c could be anything

why am i wrong?

A+B+c=252 ( average of 84*3) eq1

A+b+c+d=320 eq2

eq1 -eq2

d=68

b+c+d+e=316 eq3

e=d+3

sub into eq3

b+c+2d+3=316 eq4

eq2-eq4

A-d-3=4

a=d+7

(knowing d is 68)

a=75

to me it seems mroe symbolic than mathematical, and ironically, if something is infinite, then it is beyond our understanding anyway, and so there is no point ever trying to consider what it is like because we will always fall short

P.S i don't like thinking about infinite, too many people have spent all their lives thinking aobut it, and though it is everything, it is nothing at the same time.

i intend to take the intermediate maths olympiad and i was wondering if anyone has any old papers ( not 2006) or knows somewhere i can get some, thanks

need some help with calculus, if someone can just post some SIMPLE questions that don't involve too tough numbers and work on minimums and maximums, and post some explanation on other uses of calculus i would be v grateful, btw, when i say simple, don't go looking in a university book, if u do A level maths, just pick the easiest ones.

i like my avatar too, thats why i chose it

is it 12, sorry if i spoilt it for everyone elsebut i gotta know if i missed some out, and i saw the letter thing all over the internet, google archemides and you get some mind bender things, its cool.

lungs grow when ur older, that helps, the wind pipe grows, that helps, you have had more life of activity, that helps, the only thing that stopps someone below 40 from running as far is state of mind. it is phycosymatic ( look it up)

edit:i might have spelt it wrong

i get it so ?=2, but it wasn't even a question, OR WAS IT? *spooky music*

yes, but these A's and B's are our particles, it is just a difference perspection

1/3, now if i substitute / with divide, which you often use anyway you get 1 divided by 3, which is your answer, you can do the same with decimals, and all minus is is 0 - 3 if it is - 3, think of it as 0 + n. so if n were positive it would be 0 + + 4 which is 4, if it were minus it would be 0 + -3 which is clearly - 3

assuming they do find a something ( i daren't say particle cos it might not be!) that makes up everything then surely they could perform teleportation, of cupboards and such, by studying the structure of the cupboard, then destroying teh cupboard and then re creating this cupboard in basic properties. so we could do teh same for people, as EVERYTHING about the persons personality is in the brain, which is just a load of circuits, you could recreate someone somewhere else and destroy the original. btw you do need to destroy the original or it won't work ( long story). so what is this person that has been teleported, it isn't the same person, all it is is a bunch of basic particles bunched together by a computer, but it acts like a person, it is identical.

the other original is killed, but yet it seems as though the original is right there *teleported*. does this counteract the theory of heaven and hell and life after death and soul, i think it does.

will we ever get to the point where we can get a single particle from anything, will there ever be a basis at which everything can be made, or will it just keep getting smaller, if we do we will have gotten to the smallest possible thing, that happens to also be inside a black hole THE SINGULARITY. or will it just get so small we just get to energy that is bound together by gravity. it seems to make sense to me, everything being energy bound together by gravity over itself, because this energy is sooooo great the gravity can hold it together. i kinda think this is basically the string theory, except theirs is in a string, and hell, why not!

i don't think fish have real process of their mind, it is proven that they don't feel pain.

and they follow each other, they are all the same, the only thing we know has a personality is people. when fish swim in scools ( i think i spelt taht wrong) they just follow each other. they are not independant like humans, none have a more exciting way of life. they are the same

i think there is somethings major wrong with the fish brain, it can't feel pain that is one fault maybe it can't have a personality.

sorry this should be in the cafe, can someone put it there.

thanks, i tend to explain this topic alot, i find it is easier if we stop thinking about how small we are and try to make ourselves bigger

( not litterally but make a bigger difference)

because there is no point in knowing how big it is unless we can be that large and there are limitations, as tehre are no limitations i think that we should just reach for the stars and constantly achieve more. ( no pun intended)

in the fear to be unpopular i will make a reply that is slightly more on topic. you see, imagine the space time continuam.

imagine a peice if cloth that is woven in 2 directions, vertically and horizontally

( there is actaully 4 dimensions but i am not going to bother witht that at the moment)

one of those directions of string is TIME, the other is space.

that picture of a black hole is only an artists impression, a real drawing would be nothing at all, teh only way we know about black hole is by losing out reflected signals, that is that the black hole pulls them in.

a black hole is the singularity, it is teh absence and the only fault in existance.

what enters there turns to nothingness. it enters the world of anti-matter/

you see Newtons second law says everythinhg has an opposite as matter has an opposite

you see that actaully Einstien was a bit off the mark when he says that E=MC^2

it is actaully E=+ or - MC^2

so antimatter has the same amount of energy as matter

so it stays balanced

anyway back to the cloth, well now imagine putting weights on this cloth

it sags

these sags are how space time light and mass travel around it, this is the force of gravity on EVERYTHING absolutely everything, this cloth is the assortment of different things form space to time to light (EMW-electromagnetic waves).

now a black hole is this cloth with a hole in it.

this never ending cloth has a puncture where all that enters is lost into the anti-universe.

this may sound Sci-FI but it does fulfill all scientific laws and is the most prominent suggestion among sceintists today.

hope i answered your question.

wow, thats pretty clever, i guess that would work for ever,

can anyone proove it. ie, using algebra, i have been thinking about it but i always find it easier when i know the answer

i see, well then i will be seeing you around
