Let the speed of Ben be x mph. Therefore, the speed of Alan is x - 0.6 mph. Their combined speed is 2x - 0.6 mph. This is equal to 11.4 miles divided by 3 hours. i.e.3.8 mph.
2x - 0.6 = 3.8,
2x = 3.8 + 0.6 = 4.4
x = 4.4/2 = 2.2
Therefore, the speed of Ben is 2.2 mph and the speed of Alan is 1.6 mph.

I cannot figure out this problem because I am dumb 
two hikers, alan and ben, are 11.4 miles apart and walking towards each other. they meet in 3 hours. find the rate of each hiker if ben walks .6 mph faster than alan
